Adam Toon at the Biological Interest Group – Wednesday 10th June – Byrne House, 1-2pm

Dear all,

You are invited to the next meeting of the Biological Interest Group. It will take place this coming Wednesday 10th of June. It will be held in the seminar room at Byrne House, from 1-2pm. Participants can bring lunch and drinks if they wish.

Next week we are very pleased to receive the visit of Adam Toon, from EGENIS. We will be discussing the attached paper ‘Tools, concepts and incommensurability’. The paper is a first draft, and Adam would be extremely grateful for people’s comments. He also kindly provided us with an abstract :

“What are scientific concepts? How are they related to the material culture of science, such as instruments, formulas, maps and diagrams? This paper addresses these questions by drawing on recent work in cognitive science and philosophy of mind. We often think of the mind as inside the head. By contrast, the extended mind thesis claims that mental states sometimes extend into the world. Proponents of the extended mind thesis typically focus on cases of extended beliefs. In this paper, I argue for the existence of extended concepts. Many scientific concepts, I suggest, are realised not inside the scientist’s brain, but by interaction with external, material devices. I contrast this view of concepts with Thomas Kuhn’s influential analysis of the role of exemplars in science and argue that it adds a new dimension to our understanding of conceptual change and incommensurability.”

Please contact Thomas Bonnin at tb391 [at] exeter.ac.uk for a copy of the paper or for any other information.
