Addition to programme

Please note that an additional date has been added to the programme of the Biological Interest Group, from 11:30am-12:30pm on Monday 19th March we will be discussing a paper by (and with) William Wimsatt.  The paper and background reading are below:

Michael Morrison will be leading the discussion based on a paper very recently accepted for publication, which he would like to take as a starting point for discussion and development of new ideas and possibly further research.

John Dupre will be presenting work on the ways in which recent findings in microbiology and metagenomics challenge existing ideas about life, evolution and reproduction.

Prof. Dupre would like to talk about ontological pluralism in biology, with regard to genes, organisms and species – how different and similar are the grounds for pluralism in these cases?  And to what extent might the inevitability of pluralism be explained by the need to abstract fixed individual things from constantly changing processes?
